Teaching
As an advocate for patients with rare diseases, my teaching is greatly informed by my research on uncertainty. I encourage students to embrace uncertainty in their pursuit of knowledge by approaching complex issues with creativity and collaboration. While students are often rewarded for knowing the one correct answer in medical school, my teaching activities focus on situations where there may not be one correct answer. I equip students with the ability to assess the situation and determine the best course of action based on their goals and the goals of the other person (patient, colleague, etc.). I also prioritize using patient stories to educate our students through qualitative research, patient and family panels, and standardized patient encounters. I aim to humanize medicine and train students to become knowledgeable and caring physicians who value all patient experiences and stories.
